Chapter 15

Joining as a Player

This chapter is for players. You need Far Table installed and a join code from your DM. Nothing else: no account, no sign-up.

On the very first screen, tap Join as Player.

The join form

One short form, asked once:

  • Session Code, already holding FAR-TABLE- with the cursor after it, so you type only the four characters your DM reads out. Typing is forced to capitals.
  • Your Name, the real one, shown to the DM beside your character.
  • Character Name.
  • Species, from a dropdown list. Picking "Other..." opens a text field for a species not on the list, and then requires it.
  • Class, from a dropdown list.
  • Speed in feet, starting at 30.
  • Darkvision in feet, filled in from your species. Blank means "use the default"; a deliberate 0 is kept as a real zero, so no darkvision stays none.

Then tap Join Session at the bottom.

On a Mac or Windows machine the form leads with a card telling you to pair your phone. On a computer the phone is your dice camera, and without one you cannot roll. See chapter 34, Pairing Your Phone.

Saved characters

If you have made characters on the Characters screen from the app's first screen, a Saved Characters card sits above the fields. Tap a row to fill in name, character name, species, class, and darkvision. It is a shortcut, not a profile: typing the form in by hand saves nothing.

A Use Last Session Details link in the bottom bar refills the form from your last successful join. When what is typed matches that join exactly, the main button reads Reconnect instead.

Picking your color

Once the DM's device answers, a color picker opens and will not close until you choose. Taken colors appear faded and cannot be tapped. Your color marks your token and everything you place all night, so pick one you will recognize across the map. Rejoining a session you were already in keeps your old color, and no picker appears.

Your three tabs

Along the bottom: Session, Atlas, Play.

  • Session: your session code, the party roster (color, character name, player name, species, class), and a "Combat Active" card with an Open Combat button during a fight.
  • Atlas: everything your DM has revealed to you, in three sub-tabs, Maps, Assets, and Rules. A player has no Encounters sub-tab; the DM does. Encounters are private prep, never shown to you. Chapter 35, The Rules Reference, covers Rules.
  • Play: the live table. The current map, your token, pins, dice photos, and the combat tracker when a fight starts. Read chapter 17, The Play Tab and the Exploration Map, then chapter 24, Playing Your Turn.

Joining late is fine: the DM's device sends what you missed in the background, with a progress banner, not a blocking screen. See chapter 16, "Staying in Sync".

When a join is refused

A refused join lands you on a screen titled Couldn't join, showing the reason and a Return to Home button.

The refusal that surprises people: a device that authored a campaign cannot also join that same campaign as a player. If you are the DM of a campaign on this phone, this phone cannot be a player seat in it. The message gives the ways out: host it from here, join from another device, or delete this device's authored copy first.

A wrong code, or a DM who is not hosting, never gets that far: the attempt fails on the form itself and the error text appears under the fields. Check the four characters and try again.

Losing the connection

If the connection to the DM drops, a dark overlay covers the screen: "Connection lost.", "Tap Reconnect when your network is restored.", and a Reconnect button.

Nothing reconnects on its own. The app waits for you to say your network is back rather than hammering a dead link. One tap rejoins with your stored details, keeping your token, your color, and your place in the turn order. Chapter 46, Troubleshooting, has the rarer cases.

When the session ends

When the DM ends the night you get a screen titled Session ended: "Your DM has ended the session. Any maps, assets, and pins you've received remain in your Atlas." Tap Return to Home.

That is true: everything revealed to you stays on your device, readable with no session and no network, which is chapter 30, Browse Offline: the Player's Atlas. The live map and the session's dice photos clear everywhere, because those are table talk, not records.

Leaving on your own

To leave early, go to the Session tab and tap Leave in the top bar. It goes immediately, with no confirmation prompt, so be sure before you tap it. What was revealed to you stays, and rejoining is the join form again with Use Last Session Details to refill it.
