Chapter 29

Ending a Fight

There are two ways out, and both belong to the DM alone. Players have no button here. End Combat stops the fight and leaves the encounter standing. End Encounter packs the whole encounter away, and it is only offered before a fight has started. You never see both at once.

End Combat

On a phone or tablet, open the combat tracker and scroll to the bottom of the panel. End Combat is the red button at the very end of the list, under the last combatant card.

On a Mac or Windows machine it sits in the same place, at the bottom of the initiative column beside the map, with End Turn at the top of that same column.

Tapping it asks first. The dialog is titled "End Combat?" and reads: "This clears active combat and dice queue state. The encounter map will remain available." Confirm with the button labeled End Combat, or back out. Nothing has happened yet at that point.

Once you confirm:

  • Combat ends on every device at the table, not just yours. Players' trackers empty out with no action from them.
  • The dice photo on screen clears, on every device. Ability check photos are separate and are dismissed the usual way, per chapter 20, Dice Are Photos.
  • Target marks and your own combatant selection are dropped, so no panel is left hanging over a fight that is over.
  • Familiars, movable spell-effect tokens, and static shapes drawn during the fight are removed. They were combat-only.
  • Player characters and monsters stay on the map, carrying the status and conditions they had at the last bell. A monster you killed stays dead in the exploration roster.

If an encounter is still active underneath, a message reads "Combat ended. Returning to exploration." and you land back on the exploration view with the map and tokens intact, free to start another fight on the same map. With no encounter active, the message is just "Combat ended."

End Encounter

This is the exploration-only sibling. It appears once an encounter is active and combat has not started, in place of End Combat.

  • On a phone or tablet: the red button at the bottom of the tracker panel, where End Combat would otherwise be.
  • On a Mac or Windows machine: a red End Encounter button at the right end of the top toolbar, opposite the Start Combat button.

It asks you to confirm. Confirming packs the encounter away: the tokens come off the map, drawings clear, the battle map is taken down, and the Encounter tab returns to its empty state. The encounter itself is untouched in your Atlas, ready to stage again another night.

If combat is somehow still running when you end the encounter, the app ends the fight first, then clears the encounter. You do not need to do both by hand.
